2018 National Health Center Week Events

The MHC Coalition for Health and Wellness celebrated National Health Center Week on August 14th at both health centers – Bassett Family Practice and Ridgeway Family Health. National Health Center Week is an annual celebration with the goal of raising awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers over the past five decades. Health centers are independent, non-profit, non-governmental health care organizations. While no two health centers are exactly alike, they share the same mission: To provide access to high quality, cost-effective health care services to everyone, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.

Both of the Coalition’s health centers, along with many staff, were decked out in Super Hero decor to go with the health center week theme, “Celebrating Health Centers: Home of America’s Health Care Heroes”.

This year marks ten years since Bassett Family Practice was established. The celebration kicked off with Patient Appreciation Day at Bassett Family Practice, in which patients were offered refreshments, the opportunity to stop for a quick super hero pose and learn more about services offered, in addition to primary care. Delegate Charles Poindexter stopped by to chat with Rhonda Clark, FNP,DNP – Clinical Director, to discuss the services that the health center provides the community (Pictured above article). Members of the Coalition’s Board of Directors also got a few minutes to talk to Poindexter and took the opportunity to take some photos with staff members.

On Tuesday evening, Ridgeway Family Health hosted an Open House event that included fun activities for children, free health screenings and tours of the facility. Refreshments were provided by Subway and Walgreens. Cindy Cunningham, RN and Health Educator demonstrated how patients can benefit from the chronic disease self- management services as she served “cucumber pimento cheese sandwiches” and water infused with fruit as a light, healthy snack. 10-15 individuals took advantage of the mobile bus offering free health screenings.
